Fenwick High School Chapel Restoration
Educational & Ecclesiastical — Oak Park, Illinois
MA led the restoration of the Fenwick High School Chapel including repairs to the plaster, reredos, stained glass, and addition of air conditioning. Originally constructed in the 1940s, the stained glass exterior envelope was failing, leading to water infiltration and increasing damage to the iconic stained glass windows, designed and fabricated by Dominican Friar R.A. Zarulenga in 1958. For nearly 60 years the windows held up despite their unorthodox construction, and the time came to clean the windows and install modern exterior protection. The original exterior protective rippled glass was removed and new clear exterior protective panes were installed increasing natural light into the Chapel. The stained glass windows were completely disassembled with each piece of glass cleaned while broken pieces were repaired or matched and replaced. The windows were then fully re-camed, with new reinforcement and ventilation installed, allowing for natural convection and prevention of condensation on the stained glass.
